March 2017
One day, I came to the realization that everything I owned was blue, green or some shade in-between.
I hadn't realized I had a favorite color, but I obviously did.
So I put a ban on purchasing clothing or accessories in that range of color.
But hair is neither an article of clothing nor a piece of accessory.
So I decided to do my bit to make the world a little brighter.
Using all my favorite colors.
All of them.
Turns out there's a lot of work involved though.
Especially when your hair stylists consist of two friends who've never dyed hair in their lives and did all their learning through youtube and the internet.
Part of the complexity involves covering your hair and scalp in coconut oil for hours.
The other part involves bleaching your hair over the course of 3 sessions.
The first two sessions, not pictured here, may have resulted in patchy streaks and streaky patches due to uneven bleaching.
I considered telling people I was going for a tiger or cheetah look.
But by the third session, my stylists were able to smooth out the color to something quite charming if I do say so myself! I'd never thought of going blonde before, but it's definitely a possibility now!
The coloring session was the fastest and turned out super well! Luckily my hair has always been pretty healthy despite my best attempts otherwise, so didn't get too damaged in this crazy dying process.
I actually really love the result, a gradient running from a deep, royal blue to sky blue to teal green.
And now when I see people, I can tell them--
Hi. My name is Tammy and I love all the colors from blue to green. Nice to meet you!
I saw a pigeon having a bath in water puddled up at the curb side.
I'd never seen such a thing in real life, up so close.
In such a filthy bit of water, Mr. Pigeon was having such fun!
And really, so did we.
We kayaked and camped in Tomales Bay over the weekend. A first for me!
Kayaking is hard work. But oh, such fun!
Feeling the water pass below you, it's fun.
Things didn't get as wet as I'd expected.
And it turns out you can load up quite a bit on a kayak. Food and camping gear for days.
The world is really full of really great beings and creatures doing really great things all the time.
It's just about finding them.
On the opposite end of the kayaking/camping spectrum, I attended another Brit+Co event.
I love Brit+Co events.
This isn't an advert for them, but the free food is always super delicious, and the crafting events they put on are always thoughtful and fun. Young city women arrive in doves every time.
I also love that whenever I go to these events, I'm slightly uncomfortable because I'm far from the target demographic. The typical attendee is extremely fashionable, well-dressed, well-made, middle/upper class, most-likely-white-but-possibly-Asian.
And I here I am.
In all my glory.
I show up on my shitty, Trek mountain bike with a torn up seat and brakes that work questionably well, my backpack and hat completely soaked through because I rode my bike through the sopping SF rain and as I check in at the front desk to assure them that I do have a reservation for the event, I take off my equally wet jacket so that I can stop shivering from the moisture that's slowly seeping into my bones.
And yet, I wonder if things in life hadn't gone different, if maybe I wouldn't have loved this instead. Fashion, theater, the arts.
Now pictures of flowers and donuts because spring.
