June 2017
She braided my hair
And I became a mermaid
The strands sparkled
Like scales
We washed and washed
The scales away
To find what would remain
It's interesting how
Some colors disappear
While others stay
On Monday, the teacher asked us what we did on the weekend
The other children talked about going to the market with their families
To buy styrofoam trays wrapped in plastic, hiding a layer of steaks
And resealable bags stuffed with just chicken breasts and no wings or thighs or feet
But the market they talked about was not
The market I went to, because the market I went to was full of
Gaping fish, their mouths slowly opening and closing as they lay on sheets of ice
Roasted ducks hanging from their necks twisted around metal rods
Clucking chickens waiting to be pulled out by the butcher from their cages
They said my market was barbaric
And that a plastic zip-lock bag filled with frozen breasts was civilized
I was
Scared to
Fall so
I
Flew
Hey there Plain White T's
What's it like at the County Fair
You're a hundred feet away
And boys tonight I know it's rare
Yes I do
Who'd believe for $10 bucks I could see you
I swear it's true
I take a bite
And it disappears
Where did it go?
I miss you
Dole whip ice cream
Elephants are great
Their eyes are gentle and sweet
It's a haiku yay
Omurice,
Light of my kitchen
Fire of my stove
My sin, my r/shittyfoodporn
